March 2008 The San Francisco Professional chapter of Engineers Without Borders-USA  is hosting a blog of their March trip to Andhra Pradesh, India to implement a water sanitation system. March 7, 2008  This meeting was canceled due to inclement weather.  A LEED certified professional speaker will be scheduled to speak at the April chapter meeting instead.

February 7, 2008  The North Texas Chapter of EWB-USA held its first general chapter meeting of 2008.  Read the meeting minutes.

 

January 31, 2008 Father Thames, the Director of Our Lady of Carmel School in Cabezas, Bolivia visited DFW and spoke with the EWB-USA North Texas Chapter about the needs of his school.  The chapter began outlining the scope of work and setting a tentative date for our next trip to Bolivia.   

 

January through March 2008  Members of our chapter will be speaking to professional groups around the metroplex to discuss the work of  EWB USA –North Texas and to encourage more participation in our ongoing projects.  If your organization is interested in hearing a presentation from us please let us know.

 

 

 

 

 

Fall 2007  Johnny Murrell, member of EWB USA-North Texas Chapter, and alumnus of The University of Texas at Arlington, is recognized on the UTA Web site for his accomplishments with Engineers Without Borders USA.  Read the article.

 

May 1, 2007  We have been approved for our first solo project in Cabezas, Bolivia, 'Irrigation System for a School Vegetable Gardens and Tree Farm'.  Steve Brown is leading this project. He is working with a group of students at UTA to design a system to catch and clean run-off water for use in irrigation. April 2, 2007   Dr. Qasim, of the University of Texas at Arlington, discussed the issue of arsenic poisoning in the developing world during our last meeting.  Arsenic poisoning has caused the disability and death of millions of people in the rural areas.  A research program was conducted at UTA to address many issues dealing with arsenic removal by enhanced coagulation and arsenic concentration in the residuals.

 

 February 2, 2007   Our guest speaker this month was Bob Walker, a member of the EWB-USA National Executive Board and the Executive Director for the Uni-Bell PVC Pipe Association.  Uni-Bell is a non-profit international association providing engineering and other technical support services.  Uni-Bell's mission is to help people gain access to safe, sustainable water and wastewater sanitation through the responsible and resource-efficient use of PVC pipes and fittings.

 

 

 

 

 

 

October 10,  2006   Ryan Stoltz was the speaker at this month's meeting.  Ryan recently traveled to South Africa to help children at an AIDS orphanage. During that time, Ryan and his team helped build a home for a grandmother and eight children who were left without parents due to the AIDS pandemic.  Ryan is a recent UT grad with a degree in Architectural Engineering. He recently joined Jaster Quintanilla in Dallas.

 

September 15, 2006  The University of Texas Student chapter is underway!  Over forty interested students signed up at recent university events, and the group is currently organizing under the leadership of Dr. Andrew Kruzic, PE, the associate chair in the Civil & Environmental Engineering department at UTA.  The North Texas professional chapter will work with these students on one of several potential projects, including a tsunami-relief project in India and a drinking water project in Honduras.

September 1, 2006  The EWB-USA North Texas professional chapter will double its efforts to support the EWB-USA Student Chapter at the University of Texas-Arlington. This effort will include attending Student Chapter meetings, providing professional speakers for the Student Chapter meetings, establishing EWB-USA projects to encourage active student participation, and mentoring EWB-USA student members. We will also seek to help recruit new students to EWB-USA by participating in student engineering organizations and other chapter activities. In order to help get the word out, an EWB-USA information table was set up at the Maverick Cookout and Activity Fair on August 30, and will be set up again at the Engineering Welcome Bash on Friday September 8 from 11:00 to 1:00.

 

June 10, 2006  EWB-North Texas announces fundraising goal of $20,000 for 2006.   This money will aid our work with the subsistence fishermen of Southeastern India.  These villages were devastated by the 2004 tsunami.  See our Projects page for more details or see our one-page pamphlet to learn more about this project.

 

April 6, 2006  Frank Shea, a former Peace Corps volunteer, opened the meeting by giving a presentation on his volunteer experience in Kenya for the Peace Corps in the 1970s.   Samantha Garvin, a former Peace Corps volunteer and current Peace Corps regional recruiter, concluded the meeting by giving a presentation on ways the EWB-USA North Texas chapter and the Peace Corps can partner to identify and solve infrastructure challenges in rural and underdeveloped areas.  EWB-USA North Texas chapter secretary, Frank Griffin, gave a brief synopsis of the EWB-USA International Conference which was held at Rice University in Houston, Texas, on February 16-18, 2006.

March 8, 2006   EWB-North Texas will be working with the Central Houston and San Francisco chapters to drill bore wells and install solar-powered pumping stations in the Indian villages affected by the 2005 tsunami.  We will be on-site from March 27 to April 19.

 

 

 

 

 

 

November 10, 2005  At our November meeting, Anthony Nagy presented his finding on a recent trip to the costal villages near Valle Hermoso, Mexico (view presentation).  The North Texas Chapter is working with the University of Texas-Arlington student chapter to design improved solar distillation system for the community.  Learn more... 


February 10, 2005  Kathy Sanders was our guest-speaker for the month of February. Kathy is the founder and CEO of Texas New Community, a 501(c)3 organization that will be developing a new community near Houston for high-functioning mentally-challenged adults. New Danville will provide its residents with comprehensive services so they can live productive, safe lives with their peers.
